Tithe was a tax paid to the Established Church (Church of Ireland), calculated as one-tenth of the rateable value of one’s agricultural produce, tithe was a tax on all agricultural land excepting only church lands, glebes and urban areas and was paid by leaseholders and occupiers of all religious denominations to the clergy of the Established Church of Ireland, only persons occupying upwards of 5 acres of land were liable for tithes. The amount was fixed, based on the average price for wheat and oats in each parish over the seven years preceding 1821, and was to be paid in cash rather than in kind (e.g., services, crops). There was growing resentment against this tax, especially by Presbyterians and Catholics.Roman Catholic farmers were also required to pay a tithe to their own priests and as a consequence deeply resented this official tax.A “Tithe war” erupted in 1831 you can read it about it here. All agricultural land across the country was required to be surveyed and applotted, or valued. During the period 1823 to 1837, a Tithe Applotment Survey was made in each civil parish across the whole of Ireland to determine the value of tithe payable by different landholders. Two people were appointed by each parish to carry out this assessment. The material was arranged by civil parish and townland in volumes known as TITHE APPLOTMENT BOOKS.In 1838, parliament introduced a Tithe Commutation Act for Ireland,This reduced the amount payable directly by about a quarter and made the remainder payable in rent to landlords. They in turn were to pass payment to the authorities. Tithes were thus effectively added to a tenant’s rent payment. This partial relief and elimination of the confrontational collections ended the violent aspect of the Tithe War.Full relief from the oppressive tax was not achieved until the Irish Church Act 1869, which disestablished the Church of Ireland, by the Gladstone government.
.Here are tithe payers in Listamlet in 1833, and like I mentioned above, only folk with 5 acres and over had to pay,so a lot of names with smaller holdings won’t be in it.
